bowling alley fryers 65/365

bowling alley fryers 65/365, originally uploaded by laurasjoquist.

John was gone for most of last week so we spent some quality family time at the bowling alley this morning. Bowling alleys are hard places to take good pictures. The lighting is dim and there are a lot of people always moving around. So I took this pic at the snack bar while we were having sodas and waiting for our lane.  Fried bowling alley food is yummy, and also as John just pointed out the reason we can afford to live in this country.  We meaning he and I.  You know due to the whole food scientist that breads things gig John has going on.

candy bowl 64/365

candy bowl 64/365, originally uploaded by laurasjoquist.

Keegan worked off some of his car insurance this evening by watching Jack. John and I went on a date. Dinner at the Thai Hut, a short trip to the bookstore, a co-worker’s condo-warming party. You’ve got to love a restaurant that gives you a piece of candy at the end.

At the bookstore I looked through a magazine, recommended by my knitting friend Steffanie, called Stuffed. I came across these awesome stuffed houses that I would love to make at the outreach center. I’m just not sure a house is the appropriate thing to make there since most of these people are one mistake or less away from being completely on the street.

The houses were made of scrap bits of felt and fabric with little patchy doors and windows. They were freaking cute! And because they are patchy, don’t require a whole lot of precision sewing skill. I had a short dream where all of the guests made a house and the houses were auctioned off at a charity event to raise money for the homeless. But I’m realistic enough to see that probably will never happen

Still, cool idea.

I’m not homeless

Just a side note that has nothing to do with the 365 photos project and very little to do with art.

I’m not homeless.  I was unaware I even looked homeless until this morning.  I was volunteering at the homeless outreach center this morning (in the art room-so there’s the art part), when I was approached by one of the “guests” who wanted to know which fellow I was with.  When I told him none of them.  He wanted to know if I wanted to sit with him at lunch.  When I told him I wouldn’t be staying for lunch he wanted to know if I would save him a spot next Monday and we could eat together then.  At that point I finally broke it to him that I would probably be eating my lunch at my HOME with my totally not dysfuntional FAMILY for the forseeable future.  I hate to be all in your face secure and normal, but sheesh the dude just couldn’t take a hint.  Although his buddies (they were painting vases) got a good laugh out of it.

So let me just reiterate, I am not homeless and I just want to say thank you John.

half eaten doughnut 63/365

half eaten doughnut 63/365, originally uploaded by laurasjoquist.

When Jack was in preschool/daycare, we used to stop at the Kroger every Thursday morning to get a doughnut. The whole thing kind of fell apart when he started catching the bus to Kindergarten last year. But now I’m not working and the weather is too cold run outside, so I drove him into school this morning before hitting the YMCA for a run. Last night he came down after bed time to remind me that I promised him next time we drove in, we would get doughnuts. He was so cute in his PJs that I had to say yes.

I think he must miss it. It must have been his special time to hang out with mom and dad before facing the world. He even made friends with some of the retired gentlemen who hang out there at the Starbucks in the morning. They still wave to him when we happen to see them in the store.

I was wondering today how he manages to be so well-adjusted. Maybe it was the multiple years of going for Thursday doughnuts that put him on the right track. Nothing says security like a frosted doughy baked good.

He always gets the one with sprinkles.

stash hat 62/365

stash hat 62/365, originally uploaded by laurasjoquist.

My wonderful friend Steffanie made this cool hat for Keegan. It arrived in the mail today. I greatly admire people who can knit or crochet. It’s a skill I’ve tried and failed to learn many times. I’m not sure why I can’t do it. It may have something to do with my ongoing inability to distinguish left from right. I can’t follow dance directions either and subsequently never made it into the spring musical in high school. Or maybe that was because I can’t sing. Just ask my family. They had to listen to me murder songs on Lego Rock Band this weekend.

burned cookies 61/365 and 60/365

burned cookies 61/365, originally uploaded by laurasjoquist.

Yesterday I burned the cookies. I mean really burned them. I was distracted by trying to write a resume for the graduate school program and left those babies in for about an hour. Yum.

I didn’t post #60 here, but it’s on the Flickr sight if you need to see it.

I found this interesting group on Flickr today. Very cool. Something I would like to try with all the old pics my mom has of our Montana/Oregon vacations. http://blog.flickr.net/en/2010/01/27/a-look-into-the-past/

green tea latte 59/365

green tea latte 59/365, originally uploaded by laurasjoquist.

I enjoyed a relaxing morning grocery shopping with the husband(without the child). Afterwards we stopped at Starbucks for coffee and tea. I absolutely enjoy Starbucks green tea lattes. They’re the best. I haven’t had one at any other coffee shop that can compete. Having a green tea latte and John all to myself for a couple hours was a real treat for me.

For part of our conversations, we talked about possible art shows/venues. I would like to do a spring show somewhere with my collages and a show next January or December of my 365 photos project. Time to start writing up some proposals.

sushi 58/365

I’ve started taking the camera with me everywhere. I have a hard time just pulling it out and taking a shot in public places. I’m working on that though. I took it to the book club meeting and the library last week. If I have the camera with me ALL the time, there are so many opportunities for great photos. If I leave the flash off and adjust ISO for the lighting, I can be pretty unobtrusive with my shots. I’m trying to make taking pictures of your food in a restaurant look normal.

Like I said, white plates make the food photo. I still need to get myself a set.

studio 57/365

This is my “studio”. It shares space with Jack’s old toys, extra bedding and canning supplies. It doesn’t always look like this. I was in the process of cleaning it up when I took this shot. Notice the awesome new netbook in the background. I was listening to Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me’s last pod cast.

Now that it’s clean again, maybe I can get some work done.

pinecone 56/365

pinecone 56/365, originally uploaded by laurasjoquist.

I don’t really care for winter. Or so I say. The colors of the other seasons can mislead an artist. I tend to think there is no beauty in winter, only cold and white and after white dark.

I took a walk in the woods today to prove myself wrong. It was a balmy 30 degrees and the woods offer some protection from the wind. I found that the beauty of winter lies in the details. There are colors in the woods, they are just infinitely more subtle.

I have to confess that even though I bitch about the season, I would probably miss winter if it wasn’t around anymore.

And also, when I redo the bathroom upstairs I am putting in pine green floor tiles and a counter top that looks like snow covered with bits of bark and pine needle.
