three paintings 155/365

three paintings 155/365, originally uploaded by laurasjoquist.

I found these cardboard cut outs of birds at the craft store and became inspired to make some paintings. Also, I need stuff to sell this summer at the art fairs. So this is just a shot of what I spent all day today and yesterday doing.

I love, love, love my new flash. I can’t believe I didn’t get one sooner. It makes taking painting photos so much easier.

apple slices 154/365

Ok, so this photo makes it look like I had a pretty lame day. But actually I painted all day and got a lot done. It wasn’t until I was cutting up apples for the before bedtime snack that I realized I had no picture for the day.

roland olson forest preserve 153/365

This week’s forest preserve was Roland Olson. The bike path runs straight to it from our house. It’s not much to see. Just a short walking path 2.5 miles and some soccer fields. It’s mostly for horses. Which means there’s poo all over the trail.

dogwood 152/365

dogwood 152/365, originally uploaded by laurasjoquist.

This is the dogwood in our backyard. It’s one of the few things I’ve planted in the last 8 years that is growing exactly the way it should be. I didn’t photo shop the sky. It was an unusually spectacular blue on this day. Not the norm around here.

Jack bakes a cake 151/365

Jack bakes a cake 151/365, originally uploaded by laurasjoquist.

Jack has this terrible kids’ baking book that he thinks is just the bee’s knees. So with another rainy afternoon looming over us, I decided we should try to make something. I wanted brownies, because even from scratch they are super easy. But Jack chose the sponge cake recipe from his baking book.

I mis-read the directions and put in twice the amount of butter needed. Something I didn’t notice until I put it in to bake. I checked on it at about 10 minutes and saw a poolof  bubbling butter. So before Jack came back into the kitchen I remade the entire recipe and put it back in the oven.

But in a round pan instead of a square one. John said Jack would notice the change. But so far he hasn’t noticed.

movie night 150/365

movie night 150/365, originally uploaded by laurasjoquist.

As I said before the weather has been cold and rainy. Perfect weather for a guilt free movie night. Jack is an absolute freak for popcorn. I have to make a double batch to ensure that John and I get a taste too.

Our microwave is incapable of making microwave popcorn. Which is pretty much the only reason to own a microwave as far as I’m concerned, so I’m not sure why we don’t just add it to the growing microwave pile in the garage. I wonder, when did microwaves become disposable?

I make our corn in the good old air popper that was a gift from my mom when I moved out of the house almost 20 years ago. Wait, does that make it an antique?

homemade green tea latte 149/365

homemade green tea latte 149/365, originally uploaded by laurasjoquist.

This next portion of the 365 Days Project is brought to you by food. Because the weather has been cold and rainy. Which is good for the seeds in the garden, but bad for my waistline.

John brought home some powdered green tea. So I attempted to make my own green tea latte ala Starbucks. The taste was spot on, but it wasn’t even close to green. Which leads me to believe they use some kind of food coloring.

shadow on lake 147/365

shadow on lake 147/365, originally uploaded by laurasjoquist.

I have my friend Steffanie to thank for my long time obsession with taking pictures of my own shadow. She probably doesn’t even remember mentioning it to me, but I recall the moment quite clearly. We were standing in a cemetery in Kutna Hora in the Czech Republic when she told me that she always some how ends up with a picture that has her shadow in it. Ever since that day I have been looking for shadow opportunities everywhere I go. I have shadow photos from Paris, Tokyo, California, Atlanta and Chicago to name just a few. Maybe someday I’ll put together a sweet coffee table book. Any pre-orders out there?

This is my shadow on the pond at the Janesville Rotary Gardens in Janesville, Wisconsin. The spring bulbs were out in full force. If you want to see my awesome flower pictures, you can check them out on my flickr page. There’s a link over there on the side….

keiselburg forest preserve 146/365

keiselburg forest preserve 146/365, originally uploaded by laurasjoquist.

I’ve been trying to visit a different forest preserve each week. This week I made it to Keiselburg which has a nice walking path through some restored prairie. They just did a controlled burn, so the spring wildflowers were easy to spot. I think these are called Marsh Marigolds, but feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

Note to self: buy good Midwest wildflower guide.
