rock spiral 224/365

Since our hike was done early, we spent our last hiking day exploring Duluth. My Sjoquist Grandparents lived up on the hill in Duluth and I have many happy childhood memories of Canal Park and Point Beach. Jack braved the waters of Lake Superior for a swim. I did not.

I’m wondering if I can get a grant to travel around the world making spirals on beaches and mountain tops? Because that would be such a cool job.

lilly’s island 223/365

Our hiking trail was 11 miles long and I had planned to do it in 2 nights/3 days. But Jack wanted to push on to the end on the second day. This is Jack checking out Lilly’s Island on Sonju Lake. We also stopped at Egge Lake, the East Branch of the Baptism River and a beaver dam. We found 2 geocaches on the trail too.

turtle on the trail 222/365

Jack and I hit the Superior Hiking Trail in Northern Minnesota for a few days of back country hiking and camping. We took the trail running between Finland Rec Center and Crosby Manitou State Park. I picked this route because it looked like it had plenty of water to drink and things to see. I packed Jack’s camera since it was lighter. Unfortunately I sacrificed quality for comfort.

cobweb 221/365

Today’s pic should have been of my oldest nephew. We are up here for his graduation party. Go Park Panthers! But I posted this photo of a cobweb instead. I could probably come up with some poetic reason if I thought about it.

Minnesota is such a great place to own a bike, or even just a pair of walking shoes. The bike path by my mom’s house goes on forever and with so much to see on it. Taking Sarah for her morning poop walk was a pleasure.

Jack and I are in Minnesota for a week or so of visiting the family and getting back to nature. My mom’s backyard provides the opportunity to do both. She has a great deck for eating dinner while watching critters and birds.

When the rain let up today, Jack and I took the dog for a walk at the forest preserve. I haven’t given up on her yet, I’ll make her a hiking partner eventually.

foggy morning pick up 217/365

foggy morning pick up 217/365, originally uploaded by laurasjoquist.

Yesterday morning the dog insisted I get out of bed at 6 am. I’ve been training her to pee at 7 am because I am most definitely not a morning person. But lucky for John the reason she was so excited was because the phone was ringing in the kitchen. He blew another bike tire about 10 miles from home and needed a pick up. Good dog.

milkweed 216/365

The milkweed is flowering in the butterfly garden, but I haven’t seen any caterpillars munching on it yet. Is it too wet in my garden? Did they all abandon me? Bummer.

fathers’ day angel food cake 215/365

fathers’ day angel food cake 215/365, originally uploaded by laurasjoquist.

For Fathers’ Day I wanted to make a special treat for John. It’s hard to do because I know he wants to keep his plate healthy. I had 2 dozen eggs from the farmers market, so I attempted homemade angel food cake. And topped it with fruit and light whipped cream.

It tasted like angel food and had the right sticky outer layer, but it could have been fluffier. I’ll have to revisit the recipe and see where I went wrong. Perhaps some yolk got into my whites.
