Spring in Illinois

The flowers are out in full forest in Illinois forests in April and May.  Most of these ephemeral beauties won’t last long though.   I take a hike (almost) every day to see who has shown up and who has gone away.

Photos at Pere Lachaise Cemetery, Paris

Jack’s favorite part of the trip to Paris was Pere Lachaise Cemetery. Our apartment was only a few blocks away from a “secret” side entrance and so we went there two mornings in a row. It is a place that is sad in the way that all cemeteries are, but also absolutely beautiful in its slow decay. If you’re ever in Paris with children, take them there. They will love all the little pathways and stairways and the wild flowers and broken gravestones.  Too see more photos in Paris go to my Flickr page  https://www.flickr.com/photos/laurasjoquist/sets/72157614852117618/

Photos of hen and chicks

I know.  You thought there would be some great photos of baby chicks here.  But you got a plant instead.  I am just so excited that my Hen bloomed.  I mean, I know this means my hen dies, but I’ve never had a hen that bloomed before.  And so…vigorously too.

a painting for John

I have no job.  So if I buy John a present, I am just using his money to buy him a present.  It seems to me that he should go buy it himself, and get what he really wants, and not what I think he wants.  This year I decided to make him a present for Christmas.  We have never had a headboard for our bed.  We’ve talked about getting one for years, but haven’t ever found one we like (or can afford).  I am not a carpenter.  So making a headboard was not an option for me.  But I did have an extra, large frame collecting dust under the couch.  I had decorative paper and sheet music and craft paint in the basement.  And I made him this (to hang above the bed).

fall photos at Klehm arboretum

Master Naturalist Class was at Klehm Arboretum in Rockford today.  Since it was a pleasant fall day, and since I haven’t posted photos in a while, and since I actually remembered to bring a camera, I took these photos after class.  I’ve probably taken a thousand photos of flowers and fall colors, so I decided to go black and white on these.  I miss real B&W photography.Image

photos from nicholas conservatory in rockford, il

I finished my chemistry test early today.  I used my extra time to go see the new Nicholas Conservatory.  The third Wednesday of every month is donation day, and that’s my kind of price.  Can’t wait to see what the outside gardens will look like, hopefully they will be finished soon.
